Snape looked tensely down at the rose in his hands. He'd been holding it too tight for too long and now it looked like a down right mess. More than a few petals had fallen off and the stem now looked brown.

"Lily will think I'm too cheap or too lazy to find her decent roses…" He muttered to himself.

But before Snape had anymore time to wallow in self-pity he heard an oh-so familiar voice.

"Oy! Greasy!" James voice carried across the lawn and seemed to echo off the castle walls.
"JAMES HARRY POTTER!" A shrilled voice squealed, "James Potter you ditched me in hogsmeade for your freaky little troupe of friends, you loathsome slimey git!"
Lily's face was flaming red and her brilliant green eyes seemed about ten shades darker
than usual.

"Lily…" Snape croaked so quietly, he wasn't even sure he had heard himself let alone Lily.

"Oh Snape!" Lily's tone of force changed and her eyes lightened.

James had a look of pure disgust on his face but he didn't dare do anything to Snape… not while Lily was around at least.

Lily dashed for Snape and threw her arms around him. Though before Snape could enjoy that fact that James' girlfriend was currently in his arms, Lily pulled away.
"How've you been?" She asked.

"Oh alright I supposed… Been studying a lot, you know with O.W.L.'s coming up and what not," Snape spoke softly and kept his head down.

"Yeah… but you're smart Snape, you'll pass with flying colors I'm sure," Lily grinned, "want to grab some late dinner and eat outside with me? It's nearly seven now…"

Snape smile for a second, "Yes that sounds rather nice, Lily."

Lily grabbed onto Snapes robes and pulled him off to the Great Hall, leaving James to stand alone and watch his girlfriend trot up the lawn with another boy. Snape knew that Lily was partly using him to get back at James, but he'd been so used to it and he liked Lily so much that he really didn't mind.

The Great Hall wasn't very crowded since most students had already made their way up to the dormitories. Snape and Lily grabbed a few sandwiches off the table and headed outside.

"So, who was that rose for?" Lily asked before she took another big bite of her sandwich.

"Oh, uh no one… just needed it… ingredients… for my potion…" Snape stuttered and it was very obvious that he was nervous.

"Ah, I see," Lily said with a nod.

Snape was glad she hadn't pressed him on the issue. He knew that she was probably just trying to save him and herself from an awkward situation.

"So how has life been?" Snape asked.

Lily's green eyes seemed to dance as she talked about her classes, friends, teachers, and family. Though when she arrived at the topic of James and Hogsmeade her eyes went that deep dark green color again.

"… I suppose I should be used to it by now," Lily said with a sigh.

"No. You shouldn't. It's not right for him to walk all over you like that!" Snape picked up Lily's hands, "You know how I feel about Potter…"

Lily pulled her hands away, "Snape I know but," Lily bit her lip and a single tear ran down her face.

"Lily," Snape pulled her towards him and Lily finally gave in and let herself fall comfortably into his arms.

They sat in silence for a great while. They sat long enough for dusk to become nighttime and long enough to allow Snapes robes to be drenched in Lily's tears. Finally, with a few last sniffles, Lily sat up and wiped her puffy eyes.

"Thanks," She said.

"We better get going…" Snape said.

"Or," Lily grinned, "we could stay out for a bit more?"

Snape looked at her, what was she playing at? He wasn't sure what to say so instead he just gave a simple nod and lay back on the ground. He brushed the black hair from his eyes and soon he felt Lily snuggle down beside him on the soft grass. Snape barley had time to enjoy being so close to Lily because soon she was whispering in his ear.

"Snape, do you hear that?!" Her voice sounded urgent and strained.

"Hear wha-?" But Lily's hand flew over Snapes mouth before he could say anything else.

"Get – into – the – bushes!" She stood up and drug Snape into the bushes with her.

"Ouch, Lily," Snape grumbled, he rubbed the back of his knee, he'd smacked it on a branch when they'd dove into the bushes.

"Hush!" Lily panted, "It's James and Sirius!"

Snape opened his mouth to complain more about his knee, but decided it would be best to not get caught by James and Sirius. Especially when he was laying in the bushes with James' girlfriend. Snape craned his head around so he could see James and Sirius moving down towards the Forbidden Forest.

"Did you see the nasty little bloke today?" James said, fuming, "I can't believe Lily... running off with that riff-raff..."

Sirius shrugged, "She'll come back. She's trying to make you jealous, mate," Sirius laughed, "and if you do get jealous, I'll punch you! Ya can't be jealous of that little slimeball can you?"

At this point Snape had a strong urge to jump out from the bushes and slug James right in the face, but Lily was still laying on his legs preventing him from moving. And it was a good thing too, Snape knew deep down he couldn't beat James and Sirius.

James clapped Sirius on the back, "You're right, Sirius, right," He said with a nod.

Soon Sirius and James had moved out of earshot and had blended in with the darkness.

"God, that was close..." Lily said, she crawled gently off of Snape and sat down across from him.

"That stupid git," Snape muttered.

Lily put a hand up and looked disapproving but she didn't say anything. Snape knew that deep down Lily knew it was a very true remark, but she wouldn't speak bad of him. Snape could respect that.

"Not to change the subject," Lily said, though Snape knew that was exactly her intentions, "it feels exciting to hide doesn't it?" Lily grinned and moved herself closer to Snape.

"I-I suppose so," Snape stuttered, Lily being so close was making him flush a deep shade of maroon and he became quite thankful for the dark shadows cast by the bushes.

"Snape, have I told you how much you mean to me?" Lily said touching her hand to his chest.

"Uh, probably, I-I just can't r-remember," Snape looked at her, "n-not that you're not g-great, I've just got a b-bad memory," But before Snape could babble on any longer Lily leaned forward and pressed her lips to his.

"You're so much sweeter than James," Lily whispered after she pulled away, "you don't want me just to use my body or to show off to your friends. You pay attention to me... you know when I'm upset. You can tell when I've been crying. You always want to help and you always listen to me, hell, you've listened to me whine about James since we first started to date in our 3rd year. Snape you've been a wonderful friend to me and you deserve a lot more than what I've been giving you these past few years..." And with that her lips were pressed against his again.

Snape's head was swimming trying to process all she had said and what it had meant. Was she going to finally be with him? He let Lily take the lead in kissing while he ran over her words a few more times. Her lips were so soft and perfect and it felt so natural to be kissing her. He let one of his hands rest gently on her exposed thigh and the other slid comfortably around her waist.

"I want you to make love to me," Lily whispered urgently her hand sliding to the buttons on Snape's shirt.

Snape looked at her, stunned, "Right here, right now?" Snape could hardly believe it, "Wait, Lily," Snape said grasping her hands, "If we're going to do this... I want it to be the way I imagined... Perfect, romantic... you deserve it."

Lily looked at him for a minute obviously confused by his words. Most guys wouldn't have been able to stop themselves and most wouldn't have cared about how she felt about all this. James had never been this kind to her or this in tune with her emotions, he was a great lover yes, but there was something about the way Snape wanted to do this which really set Lily's hormones on fire.

"Alright, when and where?" Lily asked.

"The prefects bathroom, midnight tomorrow night..." Snape smiled, "But remember Lily, this is only if you want to. I don't want to you to make a mistake. I hate James... but I know he makes you happy Lily, I know you love him... don't do anything you don't want to do. If you don't show up within the hour tomorrow night I'll know that you've decided  differently, don't feel pressured... I love you," Snape's voice cracked on those last three words.

Lily looked at him for a moment, "I'll see you then," She said with a small smile and with that she was dashing off towards the castle.

Snape watched her run until she faded into the blackness, then he stood up brushed himself off and made his way back to the castle as well. His thoughts and heart were racing, he was still in disbelief that any of this had really happened.
I've updated this story a bit more. I'm still debating on how I want to end this all out... any suggestions? Should Lily show up or not?

I've been having way too much fun with this tragic pairing lately... oh well.:)

Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you all.

(P.S. I think this story is set somewhere in the fifth or sixth year...)
